Image
The Story of Jermaine Jackson  Jermaine LaJuane Jackson was born on December 11, 1954 in Gary, Indiana. He was the fourth child amongst with siblings Maureen (Rebbie), Sigmond, Toriano (Tito), Latoya, Marlon, Michael, Steven Randall (Randy) and Janet. His father Joseph was a steel-mill crane operator, and his mother Katherine worked for Sears but spent most of her time being a stay-at-home mother. At an early age, the family got interested in music with the boys playing with Joseph’s guitar (against his will). But one day, Joe discovered one of the strings being broke and disciplined Tito. After Joseph fixed the string, he ordered Tito to play in front of him. Jermaine and Jackie accompanied him with the vocals. The next day, Joseph bought Tito his own guitar and formed the Jackson brothers. Overtime, younger brothers Marlon and Michael joined as well. To balance the group sound, Joseph bought Jermaine a bass guitar. Jermaine was the original lead singer of the group, but once Mi...

Mariah Carey: Mariah Carey Album Review (1990)

Image
Welcome back everyone, today we going to officially start the Mariah Carey album review cycle. Actually, I already started with her fourth album Merry Christmas and reviewed it first because it was the holiday season at the time. Now that the holiday season is long over, I want go through Mariah’s catalog to once again show everyone that there is so much more to Mariah than the overrated, overplayed Holiday tune that is one of my least favorite songs in general. Okay, enough of the chit-chat, let’s start off with Mariah’s high selling debut album. Mariah Carey Album Review (1990) 1.        Vision Of Love: We are starting off with a very familiar song. It’s a flex on Mariah Carey’s vocal abilities. You can feel the emotion she has in her debut single. The content has a sense of perseverance. Having to go through alienation saying she had to do most of this on her own. But was able to overcome all of this to achieve her dream. The song feels fulfilli...

What Happened to Salt-N-Pepa (The First Ladies of Rap)

Image
In 2023, Missy Elliott was inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. It was an historic moment as she became the first female rapper to receive this honor. But it had me wonder, nothing against Missy, why wasn’t Salt-N-Pepa were the first. They where the first female rap group to achieve mainstream success and definitely were a pioneering figure in female rap in general (not just female rap). Today let’s go through their journey with three of the most influential figures in female rap. So, without further ado… What Happened to Salt-N-Pepa? (The First Ladies of Rap) Our story begins in Queensborough Community College. That’s where two nursing students name Cheryl James and Sandra Denton. They where also part-time telephone operators for Sears and had some future famous co-workers with Martin Lawrence & Kid n Play. Cheryl’s boyfriend at the time, DJ Hurby “Love Bug” Azor also worked for Sears but was taking music classes and wanted to work on a rap song. He recruited his g...

Carmen Jones Movie Recap (1954)

Image
In 1954, Carmen Jones was released to theaters. This was an adaptation of the Broadway play that came out eleven years earlier. This featured Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge. Surprisingly, this film was well received and for Dandridge she became the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Leading role at the Oscars. What’s funny Halle Berry portrayed her in a film about her life and Halle would become the first (and so far only) African American Actress to win the award. Outside of that, Carmen Jones is deemed a significant film in history (in general). It would later be inducted in the Library of Congress and today for Black History Month, we are going to take a look at this important piece of Hollywood. Carmen Jones Movie Recap The film begins with Cindy Lou wanting to pay a visit to Corporal Joe at a parachute factory in WWII. Cindy Lou (Olga James) is trying to get in the base but is unable to. Let me just say, is it kind of odd that a gro...
