Glitter Movie Recap (2001)

Image
In September 2001, Glitter movie was released. But so many things were messy before this movie even began. One big positive, Mariah is finally free from Columbia and the control of Tommy Mottola. She signed a massive contract with Virgin Records. But then things went south. For one, there was questions about her mental health after she showed up to TRL uninvited, giving out ice cream promoting Glitter and stripping down to a more revealing outfit. Shortly after, Mariah was hospitalized due to exhaustion and was placed under hospital care for two weeks. The movie and soundtrack were pushed back as a result. The movie was released shortly after the 9/11 attack. The movie/soundtrack was a critical and commercial bomb because no one really wanted to do fun things after that (ask Willa Ford). Mariah became a Razzie award winning actress shortly after. Years later, the soundtrack and movie got a second life when the #JusticeforGlitter campaign was trending as fans realized that that er...

Mariah Carey: Rainbow Album Review

Image
Welcome back everyone, today we are going to continue with Mariah Carey’s album cycle with her seventh album Rainbow. Let me just say this, at this point in her career she was eager to get out of Columbia and remove any and every trace of Tommy Mottola from her. But Columbia countered by essentially blackballing her. Especially when it came to one of her personal cuts (we’ll talk about that one shortly). On man I haven’t mention on this review cycle was Walter Afanasieff. He was Mariah main producer/songwriter for the first six albums but this was the first in which Walter Afanasieff did not work on. Sources differ on how the divorce happened some said it was label politics other said Mariah evolution while many alleged his close affiliation with Tommy Mottola (the butter knife incident comes to mind). So she decided to make Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis the main producers of this album.  So let’s dive into the Rainbow.               ...

Mariah Carey: Butterfly Album Review (1997)

Image
Welcome back everyone, today we are going to continue with Mariah Carey’s album cycle with her sixth album Butterfly. There where expectations ahead of this given that Daydream was highly successful even though she didn’t win the Grammy. But around this time, Mariah’s marriage with Tommy Mottola was coming to an end, they filed for separation and eventually divorce by decades end. This album is transitional for Mariah as the butterfly has deep meaning for her. According to Mariah, symbolizes liberation, metamorphosis, and finding her voice and freedom. Hence why there’s a butterfly tattoo on Mariah’s mid-back. Enough of the background, let’s get into this album. Mariah Carey “Butterfly” 1.        Honey: Recognizable song on the album. I remember placing this on my top 10 Best songs of 1997. So I’ll keep this one brief. I also remember highlighting the remix making the list as this song featured the LOX, Mase and produced by the baby oil messiah.   Th...

Mariah Carey: Daydream Album Review (1995)

Image
Welcome back everyone, today we are going to continue with Mariah Carey’s album cycle with her fifth album Daydream. This is album and era does have some leadup to it. The year before Mariah had conquered Christmas and was ready to continue her urban streak. But Tommy Mottola wanted her to go back to the adult contemporary sound of the first two albums. But Mariah still wanted to test the urban streets as this was the first album she would work with Jermaine Dupri, a future collaborator of hers. Daydream winded up being a massively successful. Hope it lives it up for me. Mariah Carey: Daydream Album Review 1.        Fantasy: One of the more recognizable songs on the album. This song used the “Genius of Love” sample. Of course, the song is good, but I do want to shine the light on the ODB Bad Boy Remix because I can’t help but smile when I hear Dirty’s verse. His energy and whenever he introduces the remix, he always put forth energy on Dirty can kn...

Back to Black Movie Recap (2024)

Back To Black Movie Recap Before I begin this review, I want to clarify the legal drinking age in UK is 18. When I first saw this movie in theaters, I confused about this until I looked it up. So yeah, let’s get into this movie. Amy Winehouse is a family girl who has a love for jazz music. She comes from a musical jazz family and she has a voice like Judy Garland, according to her Nan. The next morning Amy gets a phone call from her friend Tyler who hands in her demo tape to Nick Shymansky who works for 19 Management head by Simon Fuller. On the way there, Amy listens to Lauryn Hills Miseducation album. Then she performs at a showcase and after the showcase, Virgin givers her an offer but turns it down. So she settles with Island Records. She travels to Miami to record the album Frank. Released in 2003, her album does well in the UK. Before the release of Frank to America, the label wants Amy want to improve her stage presence. Amy calls this BS, and leaves. She enters a musi...

Mariah Carey: Music Box Album Review (1993)

Image
Welcome back everyone, today we are going to continue with Mariah Carey’s album cycle with her third album Music Box. This is another album where the leadup is sparse. Just know that this is the first album where Mariah made the effort to push for the urban audience. Mariah Carey: Music Box Album Review (1993) 1.        Dreamlover: This is the most recognizable song on this project. Like I said it was a shift for her musically as it uses the Emotions “Blind Alley” sample which would later be used on the Big Daddy Kane “Aint No Half-Steppin”. It’s Mariah looking for her future lover or Dreamlover.   She wants an uplifting man, an understanding man, someone to hold but no pretenders. As the song itself, the song a classic and I shouldn’t be the only one that tell you that.   (AMAZING) 2.        Hero: Another recognizable song, it’s a song that is a singing competition staple. I think we all know the content...
