Mariah Carey: E=MC² Album Review

Image
Welcome back everyone, today we are going to continue with Mariah Carey’s album cycle with album #11 Charmbraclet. Before we talk about this album, I want to apologize for this one being a little late. I was pushing myself on the brink of burnout with this series and I had to take a miniature break, then come back and regroup. When there’s 14 Mariah albums to cover this will happen. Back with Mariah, I feel like she was facing some expectations after the Mimi album resurrected her career, hopefully MC2 can match those lofty goals. Mariah Carey “E=MC ² ” 1.        Migrate : I want to assume that this was slated to be a single at some point and it makes sense. It features T-Pain and he was a high priority collaborator/producer at the time. Well in this song Mariah tries to use autotune, it was a choice but they don’t make it too bad. And the content is nothing more of a Mariah go to the club and hang out type song. What do T-Pain add, not much outsi...

What Happened to Countdown Shows?

Image
In the early 2000, countdown shows were a staple in the music industry. We had shows like top 20 from VH1, TRL from MTV, and 106 & Park from BET among others. However, since the 2010s, the countdown shows have decline and today are borderline extinct. Today we going to talk about a few of these countdown shows, then I’ll give you my theory on what happened and if there’s a possibility for these shows to comeback. So, without further ado here’s what happened to Countdown shows. What Happened to Countdown Shows (1984-2014) The Birth of the Countdown Where do I want to begin. Let’s begin with August 1, 1981 that was the day the Video killed the radio star when MTV was born. For the first three years MTV just played music videos, and if it’s not music videos it was music related content. With the rise of videos, MTV need a way to rate which videos where the best. Sure, fans would call MTV networks to request a video to be aired but they needed something similar to a Billboard...

Mariah Carey: Emancipation of Mimi Album Review (2005)

Image
20 years ago, Mariah released her 10 th album The Emancipation of Mimi. Her past two efforts Glitter and Charmbraclet weren’t successful at the time and many thought that Mariah career was slipping away. So what she did, she decided her next album she was going to let loose and break down this wall she had from her previous works. It was going to feature some of her more dance and showcase a freer version of Mariah. Well let’s see how this goes.  Mariah Carey “Emancipation of Mimi” 1.        It's Like That: I think this is a perfect leadoff single for this rebirth. Mariah club song where she’s just here for the good times. No worries, no stress it’s like she blossomed like a butterfly yet again. It’s a song that’s needed for her given the early decade turmoil she been through. The song also features Jermaine Dupri & Fatman Scoop as they hype up Mariah on her return. It’s a song perfect for a party starter and could’ve been the signature song. Bu...

Mariah Carey: Charmbracelet Album Review (2002)

Image
Welcome back everyone, today we are going to continue with Mariah Carey’s album cycle with her nineth album Charmbraclet. Yeah, the Glitter era was a disaster. After Glitter, her contract with Virgin was bought out for $28 million. Mariah would sign another deal with Island. Instead of tapping in to modern trends, Mariah decided to tap in to some of her deeper works. So what the people think, this was Mariah’s most personal album to date. Let’s look. Mariah Carey "Charmbracelet" 1.        Through The Rain: The leadoff single for this project and it’s probably the least known leadoff single up to this point. And am I the only one that’s reminded of Mariah’s Theme from Rainbow. It’s an inspiration song that shined the light on her tumultuous 2001. Honestly, Mariah has done this better (again Mariah’s theme), but the song is still good but it doesn’t go beyond that. (GOOD) 2.        Boy (I Need You): The first thing that comes...

Mariah Carey: Glitter Album Review (2001)

Image
In September 2001, Glitter was released. But so many things were messy before this movie even began. One big positive, Mariah is finally free from Columbia and the control of Tommy Mottola. She signed a massive contract with Virgin Records. But then things went south. For one, there was questions about her mental health after she showed up to TRL uninvited, giving out ice cream promoting Glitter and stripping down to a more revealing outfit. Shortly after, Mariah was hospitalized due to exhaustion and was placed under hospital care for two weeks. The movie and soundtrack were pushed back as a result. The movie was released shortly after the 9/11 attack. The movie/soundtrack was a critical and commercial bomb because no one really wanted to do fun things after that (ask Willa Ford). Mariah became a Razzie award winning actress shortly after. Years later, the soundtrack and movie got a second life when the #JusticeforGlitter campaign was trending as fans realized that that era was misund...
